I understand that Yemen Relief will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When Yemen Relief receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.

How child malnutrition is surging in Yemen

Yemen, a country already plagued by conflict and instability, is now facing a catastrophic surge in child malnutrition. The ongoing civil war, economic collapse, and limited access to healthcare and nutrition services have combined to create a perfect storm of suffering for Yemeni children. This article explores the factors contributing to the crisis and the urgent need for international assistance to address this humanitarian catastrophe.

The Yemeni Civil War:

The roots of Yemen’s child malnutrition crisis can be traced back to the civil war that erupted in 2015. This conflict has resulted in widespread displacement, the destruction of infrastructure, and economic collapse. As a result, millions of Yemenis are trapped in poverty, struggling to access basic necessities like food, clean water, and healthcare.

Economic Collapse:

Yemen’s economy has been shattered by the war, leaving families without jobs, income, or a stable food supply. The Yemeni Rial has depreciated significantly, making even basic commodities unaffordable for many. As parents struggle to make ends meet, their ability to provide nutritious meals for their children is severely compromised.

Limited Access to Healthcare:

The conflict has also severely strained Yemen’s healthcare system. Hospitals and clinics have been damaged or forced to close, leaving families with limited access to medical care. Malnourished children require specialized treatment and therapeutic feeding programs, which are often unavailable or inaccessible due to the ongoing violence.

Impact on Children:

The most vulnerable victims of this crisis are Yemen’s children. Malnutrition not only stunts physical growth but also impairs cognitive development. Malnourished children are more susceptible to diseases and infections, leading to a higher mortality rate. The United Nations estimates that nearly 2.3 million children under the age of five in Yemen are malnourished, with over 400,000 facing severe acute malnutrition – a life-threatening condition.

STATE OF HUNGER IN YEMEN

The situation in Yemen is a dire one, with malnutrition casting a long and unforgiving shadow over the lives of countless innocent children. This calamity is the consequence of a complex interplay of factors, each demanding urgent attention and action. At the heart of this crisis lies a perfect storm of conditions that collectively nurture the growth of malnutrition:

Conflict and Instability:
Yemen’s turbulent history of conflict and instability has ruptured essential services and left families in a precarious state, exposed to the relentless pangs of food scarcity.
Economic Struggles:

A crumbling economy has stripped many families of their means to afford the nutrient-rich sustenance vital for their children’s growth, exacerbating the vicious cycle of malnutrition.

Limited Access to Healthcare:

The ravages of ongoing conflict have debilitated healthcare infrastructure, depriving children of critical medical attention that is their due.

Basic Causes of Malnutrition in Children

The tragedy of malnutrition among Yemen’s children is the tragic outcome of these aforementioned factors. A lack of adequate nutrition during critical developmental phases exacts a heavy toll, manifesting in severe and enduring consequences on a child’s physical and cognitive growth. It is the most vulnerable among us, often those who can least bear the burden, who find their future imperiled before they can even begin to harbor dreams. Acknowledging the urgency of this harrowing situation, Yemen Relief has dedicated itself to a mission of enduring transformation.
